Listening to Brooke McDonnell wax on about the notes in her espresso while sitting on the steps of Pioneer Square in Portland during the early 1990s, Helen Russell, who was enjoying her mocha with the whip cream piled high, suddenly had an idea: let’s open coffee shops in San Francisco.

When Pom Moongauklang opened her first Orlando restaurant, the eponymous Pom Pom’s Tea House and Sandwicheria (67 North Bumby Avenue; 407-894-0865; PomPomSteahouse.com), patrons were spooked by watercress and walked out when they realized American cheese wasn’t available.

Fun In The Sun In Palm Springs
- Heather Cassell

Golf and sun beaconed to us as Super G drove along Highway 5 in Rosie’s, our convertible Fiat, top down, with me in the passenger seat heading toward Palm Springs, California. The desert oasis has been the playground to the stars for decades and for this long weekend getaway it was going to be ours.
Palm Springs is unique with its 1950s architecture, art galleries, boutique shopping, and outdoor activities, especially its 124 pristine golf courses and plethora of hiking trails and national and state parks. The desert city offers travelers everything that they want under the sun. There simply is no other place like Palm Springs.

A Spanish Surprise—Fine Tapas at Downtown Orlando’s Ceviche
- Heather Cassell
- December 29, 2015
It’s my fourth day in Orlando and I’m starting to understand that there’s more to dining here than theme park hot dogs and chicken fried steak. So far I’ve had excellent new Italian food and mind-blowing Latin-Asian fusion. Now I’m about to have another culinary revelation: Tapas at Ceviche (125 West Church Street, Orlando; 321-281-8140; Ceviche.com/Locations/CevicheOrlando) that’s like a little bit of Barcelona flown into downtown’s happening Church Street Station.

Don’t accuse Kimberly Tighe of having a sweet tooth. She doesn’t have one. You might not believe me and for good reason, she’s the executive pastry chef at the Fairmont San Francisco (950 Mason Street; 415-772-5000; Fairmont.com/San-Francisco) on top of Nob Hill in San Francisco, California.

When my friend suggested Khyber Pass Kabob Restaurant (7467 Village Parkway, #9; 925-828-6000; KhyberPassKabob.com) and told me that it was a five-star restaurant on a popular review website located in a strip mall in Dublin, California I was definitely on high alert. So was Babes, who shares my feelings about restaurants and strip malls.
Babes however stayed silent and went with it in a highly unusual fashion for her. She even smiled with optimism when we stepped through the doors of Khyber Pass and were clearly in a whole other world.

One day last year, a man in Seattle took delivery of 20 turkey sandwiches. What’s so remarkable about that? Well, they weren’t delivered by a college student in a beat-up car. They came via FedEx overnight delivery. And they weren’t made in the Emerald City. They came from a sandwich shop in Orlando, Florida.

There must be crack or something going on in the kitchen at Willard Hicks (280 East Campbell Avenue; 408-374-5000; WillardHicksGrill.com) in Campbell, Calif., that the chef is putting into the food, that’s all I gotta say.
Since my first experience right after they opened several months ago my friends and I have been going back over and over again and dragging our friends and partners with us. We can’t get enough of what they call “New American Fare,” which is a twist on favorite American comfort foods with Southwest and Southern influence. It doesn’t matter, the shit is good, I mean extraordinarily good.
