Can you name the largest city in the Caribbean? It’s not San Juan, Havana, or Kingston. It’s an often-overlooked municipality in an often-overlooked country: Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.
Many visitors skip right over this city of 1.5 million and fly into Punta Cana, which is the gateway to the country’s eastern resorts. This is a shame, because while the city can be a little challenging (starched and pressed Nassau, it is not), Santo Domingo offers some of the best dining, nightlife, and sightseeing in the West Indies.

I’m in the middle of a trip to the Dominican Republic. It’s a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex-themed trip, part of a program called Tolerance Through Tourism. The idea is that by simply being an openly gay person and traveling in the developing world, you help people living in traditionally homophobic cultures to see that LGBTQI people are not so strange.

As I dig my toes into warm Caribbean sand and take another sip from the straw sticking out of the fresh coconut in my hand, I review my trip so far: In three days in the Dominican Republic, I’ve sipped rum, eaten gourmet food, splashed in the Caribbean Sea, strolled a World Heritage site, frolicked at a rainforest waterfall, and had the chance to gamble at a casino. I take another sweet swig, lie back, and let a smug thought momentarily take over:

Do you hate cruising? For years, I thought I did, too. I went on a transatlantic cruise as a teenager, and by about the fourth overcast, 50°F day, I was scanning the horizon for icebergs, because an emergency evacuation would at least have been something to do.
Years later, I went on a booze cruise out of Los Angeles. That jaunt didn’t include much time on land, either. When we did disembark, it was in Ensenada, Mexico, which is essentially a dusty, tequila-soaked suburb of San Diego whose name, I’m pretty sure, means “three-day hangover” in Spanish.
