Not everyone is going home for Thanksgiving. It’s A Vacation! Where Are People Going? Here Are The Top 10 Thanksgiving Destinations.
by Heather Cassell
The turkey might be saved on Thanksgiving.
More people are opting-out of slaving away in the kitchen for that perfect turkey dinner on a chilly Thanksgiving Day. Instead, they are opting-in and giving thanks to sunny, fun-filled family getaways turning the holiday into an excuse for a vacation.
More people are starting to kick off their Thanksgiving week the Friday before the holiday and extending it to the following Sunday or Monday, according to the Transportation Security Administration.
Warm-weather destinations and theme-parks are pushing out cold weather destinations, with the exceptions of New York City (#2) and Washington, D.C. (#9), for Thanksgiving, according to AAA.
Where are they going? The top 10 places to go for Thanksgiving are:
Orlando, Florida
For families, there’s nothing like Disney World and Universal Studios, but Orlando offers more than theme parks. There’s a whole city to explore with restaurants, shopping, and festivals, like FusionFest, not to mention the 150 golf courses and the eco-adventures just outside the city’s border.
New York City
Broadway, art, fashion, shopping, amazing food … and during the holidays the ice rinks at Rockefeller Center and in Central Park, need we say more about why the Big Apple remains in the top five destinations around the world any time of the year?
Anaheim, California
Mickey is turning 90 this year, but no matter what age the mouse is, Disneyland and California Adventures is always a family favorite. Not to mention other nearby theme-parks Knott’s Berry Farm and Universal Studios. Beyond these family playgrounds, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Venice, and the beaches offer variety making Southern California a getaway for the whole family. To get the most out of a Southern California holiday vacation packed with all the famous attractions and sites get a CityPass Southern California. The pass offers discounts on the most popular attractions and restaurants and fast tracks through the business sites and theme parks.
Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Luxuriate in the sun and surf during Thanksgiving at one of the many luxury resorts in Punta Cana. Families will enjoy Nickelodeon Hotels and Resorts, which includes the option of staying in a life-size Sponge Bob Pineapple House. Adults will enjoy any one of the many adults-only accommodations, such as Zoetry Agua. Punta Cana offers visitors world-class golf and many other outdoor activities on the land and in the water.
Las Vegas, Nevada
A little bit of gambling and some shows not to mention ziplining above Fremont Street and much more, Las Vegas’ strip offers plenty of adult entertainment and fun. However, getting out of Sin City offers history and spectacular natural sites only a short drive away, like the Hoover Dam and the Sky Deck at Grand Canyon West.
Cancun, Mexico
Stay in the Hotel Zone or Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya for party central or opt for a more relaxing getaway with a personal butler and chef to create the perfect meal for your family or friends at beachfront Azul Villa Esmeralda or in the mangroves at the Mayakoba, a gated resort area that is home to six resorts, including the Fairmont Mayakoba Riviera Maya or check-in to Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa where kids can enjoy swimming with dolphins and families can get a room overlooking the dolphin lagoon. Relax and explore ancient Maya ruins or simply relax on the beach or around the pool in one of the many all-inclusive resorts.
Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas
History to the new Margarita Mile, Dallas is blooming offering something for everyone in the Big D. Families can enjoy historical exhibits such as the commemoration site of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy at the Downtown’s Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza to the Arts District.
Honolulu, Hawaii
Surf, sun, and sand await travelers on Waikiki Beach and the Queen’s Beach in Honolulu’s famed Waikiki neighborhood. Enjoy historic stays at Moana Surfrider, where you can learn the history of the bikini, or The Royal Hawaiian, Hawaii’s first luxury resort. Learn about The Duke and surf culture along Kalakaua Avenue and visit the only royal palace in the United States, the Iolani Palace. Honolulu has it all from high-end shopping, history, and food from street favorites to fine dining, such as Chef Mavro. Honolulu is also a short drive to hiking on Diamond Head, surfing at the North Shore, exploring the Polynesian Cultural Center and the Dole Plantation, or remembering Pearl Harbor.
Washington, D.C.
It’s an exciting time to visit the Capital of the United States with the change of power coming to Congress, but The Nation’s Capital offers much more than politics and the branches of power of the US. DC offers visitors a plethora of museums not to mention the Washington Monument and the National Mall (which will reopen sometime in the spring 2019), sitting on the steps of the Supreme Court (how about catching a glimpse of the Notorious RBG or Sonia Sotomayor or Elena Kagan?) or the Lincoln Memorial, and so much more, especially in swanky Downtown Washington. The Nation’s Capital offers a thought-provoking vacation for anyone enthralled by dramatizations, such as “Madam Secretary” or the “House of Cards,” of the workings of the US government to historical monuments, memorials, museums and dazzling places to ponder it all.
Miami, Florida
Dance the night away in Miami or explore the city’s diverse art and culture scene, culinary, fashion, and beaches that make Southern Florida’s economic center so interesting. Bask in the sun at the famed South Beach or any one of Miami’s beaches. Find out why Miami is called Little Cuba in the Little Havana neighborhood and experience the city’s rich Latin culture. Luxuriate hitting the green at one of the Miami area’s 60 golf courses or hang out in Doral. Soak in the creative vibe in the Design District. These are only some suggestions for what visitors can find in sizzling Miami.
