Girls That Roam Join’s Hostelling International USA’s San Francisco 2019 Volunteer Selection Committee For The Organization’s Explore The World Scholarship To Help Make Travel Accessible To Young Adults

(San Francisco, Calif. – Thursday, January 21, 2019) Girls That Roam’s Publisher and Editor Heather Cassell joined the volunteer selection committee of Hostelling International USA’s 2019 Explore the World Scholarship.

“I’m excited to volunteer for Hostelling International USA this year. It’s Girls That Roam’s goal and my personal goal to help women, especially women from diverse backgrounds – economic hardship, ethnic, and sexual orientation, and gender identities – to be able to step beyond the borders of their lives into a whole new world where they can connect with different communities, learn and grow,” said Cassell, who is joining the San Francisco committee for the first time this year.

Girls That Roam is based in San Francisco.

“Travel is the perfect vehicle to broaden anyone’s horizons and open them up to possibilities they’ve barely begun to imagine at any age, but especially when you are young,” she added.

In 2018, Hostelling International USA received more than 200 applications from around the United States. The organization awarded 104 scholarships to Americans 18- to 30-years old, 17 of which were from the San Francisco Bay Area selected by a 6- to 12-member volunteer committee, to go on a variety of journeys around the world.

Scholarship recipients were able to go on amazing adventures like Ngozi B., who was awarded an Explore the World Scholarship in 2016.

Ngozi is a Political Science student concentrating on International Relations with a minor in Arabic at Howard University. The scholarship allowed the Washington, D.C. native to participate in the Council on International Educational Exchange’s intensive summer Arabic course in Amman, Jordan. Participating in the program helped Ngozi get one step closer to fulfilling her dream to speak Arabic fluently in order to support her professional goals to improve the quality of life for citizens in underdeveloped African countries, such as Mauritania and Sudan, according to Hostelling International USA’s website.

Last year, Hostelling International USA received more than 200 applications from across the United States.

This year, 15 Bay Area young people 18- to 30-years old from Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Mateo, and San Francisco will be selected to receive $2,000 granting them the opportunity to travel with an educational or service program.

Without the grant, these individuals wouldn’t be able to participate in these programs or travel. Many times, these grants are the gateway to these young people’s first experiences traveling outside of the US.

The Explore the World Scholarship application process is currently open for US citizens and permeant residents until 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on March 2, 2019.

Recipients will be able to attend the annual Explore The World Celebration attended by members and previous year’s awardees in the fall of 2019.
