- Heather Cassell
- August 24, 2015
The popular historic train ride rolls through the Napa Valley between downtown Napa and St. Helena serving up Napa Valley wines and fine dining along with tours of storied wineries along the tracks.
It’s a great excuse to get the girls together for an afternoon. At least that’s what Lisa Johnson, who organizes the Sisters on the Reading Edge, a book club, thought when the 11 women boarded the wine train for their annual wine train trip August 22.

It was a wonderful unexpected surprise when my girlfriend and I accidentally discovered the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm on Maui.
We arrived early at O’o Farm for our hands-on-farm experience picking the food that would be prepared into a gourmet lunch by the farm’s chef. Since we were early, the women on the phone suggested that Super G and I visit Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm (1100 Waipoli Road, Kula; 808-878-3004; AliiKulaLavender.com) which is right around the bend from O’o Farm.

Each of us saw a piece of ourselves in Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha as we played out our own SATC in the Gay Mecca dating men, women and everything in between and of course chasing our careers and fashion.

Remember the 1983 movie National Lampoon’s Vacation? The one where Chevy Chase and family drive halfway across the country to ride some roller coasters and when they finally get to Walley World it turns out to be… (SPOILER!)…closed?
Re-watching that movie recently, I couldn’t stop myself from shrieking at the screen, “Why didn’t you check the website before you left?!” (I know; 1983, but that’s still barely an excuse.)

Motorcycle enthusiasts can add a new trail to their list this fall, Missouri introduced the Ozark Hellbender.
Following in the tradition of North Carolina’s Tail of the Dragon and Tennessee’s Devil’s Triangle the ride had to have a catchy name to entice motorcyclists throughout the U.S. and the world to experience the scenic, stomach-churning roadway with plenty of sharp “twisties” and long, banked “sweepers.”

The words “Experimental” and “National Park” don’t normally go together, but they do at the Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park, (1414 Harbour Way S., Richmond, CA; 510-232-5050; http://www.nps.gov/rori/index.htm) a place not quite like any other national park or historical monument.

When visitors in other cities swelter in summer’s heat and picnic plans are abandoned for air conditioned cafes, San Francisco’s typical weather report is an invitation to gather up the picnic basket, blanket and head out. For a new take on the traditional picnic lunch in the sun, visitors can orchestrate their al fresco dining around San Francisco’s fabulous spectacle of summer fog.

It was the 1940s and there was another great war going on. Men were called off to battle. Women were called to serve on the home front. It was a major shift in gender roles and social mores for the U.S., but somehow little is known about life for LGBTs on the home front during World War II.
