Spotify Imagines If Colored Girls Ruled The Airwaves Hosting An All-Expense Paid Sound Up Bootcamp
by Heather Cassell
Traveling Asian girls, black girls, indigenous girls, and Latina girls listen up: Got a radio quality voice? Have a great idea for a podcast? Spotify wants you.
Making that dream of traveling the world and broadcasting the cool things you are doing and seeing could become reality.
Spotify, the music, podcast, and video streaming service, wants in on the action of black girls podcasts going mainstream following “2 Dope Queens,” Brooklyn-based black girl comedians Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson’s live comedy show being picked up by HBO and other black girl-led podcasts going viral and mainstream, reported Black Enterprise.
Many of the popular podcasts by black women cover pop culture, finance, politics, and more, but there’s plenty of room for black girl roamers to hit the digital airwaves.
A recent study found that only 22 percent of podcasts are hosted by women, and the numbers are even smaller when it comes to women of color, according to the magazine.
Spotify is on a mission to create a gender balance in the podcasting world with its Sound Up Bootcamp hosted at the company’s New York headquarters June 25–29.
The weeklong intensive program will take 10 hand-selected aspiring women podcasters of color through an all-expense training funded by Spotify and led by radio and podcast veterans Rekha Murthy and Graham Griffith. The trainees will learn everything from creating a podcast from conception to broadcasting and distribution from the top experts in production, broadcasters, and marketing in the field.
Panels will receive travel to and six-night accommodations in New York, breakfast and lunch, and the expert-led training throughout the five-days.
Attendees are required to participate in all five-days of programming, as well as after-hours events on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, including mixers and dinners.
On the final day of training, attendees will have the opportunity to pitch their podcast ideas to a panel of experts and professionals. The top three pitches will be funded up to $10,000.
No experience is necessary, just be a woman of color with a great idea and passion.
“We’re looking for the best ideas,” a Spotify representative said in a statement.
Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on April 10.
