Queer Comedians Take On The Bay

Comedian Julie Goldman

Comedian Julie Goldman Heads Up A Lineup Of Queer Comedians In San Francisco And Santa Rosa This Week

by Heather Cassell

San Francisco Bay Area fans don’t have to wait any longer to see Julie Goldman’s in-your-face, honest and aggressively funny style of comedy. She’s here this week and ready to make you laugh.

Julie will take to the stages of Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco and at The Laugh Cellar in Santa Rosa.

Bravo’s “The People’s Couch,” and LOGO’s “Big Gay Sketch Show and Skit Happens” star will be joined by fellow comedians Belinda Carroll and Jeffrey Jay.

Julie, who also co-hosts the hit podcast “Dumb Gay Politics with Julie & Brandy” and the extension of the show with her writing partner Brandy Howard in Los Angeles, is excited to return to the Bay Area after traveling all over the world performing.

“I am absolutely spending an extra day in each place,” wrote Julie. “I love San Francisco and I’m suuuuuuper (sic) excited to get to explore Sonoma – which I didn’t get to do last time,” she wrote in an email interview with Girls That Roam from the high seas aboard an Olivia Travel Caribbean Cruise.

She was referring to when she performed at Women’s Weekend 2.0 in Sonoma in 2014 and at Mary’s Futons in Marin in 2010.

However, Julie is even more excited to perform at the very first lesbian-owned comedy club she’s ever performed in at The Laugh Cellar.

“In all the million years I have been performing standup comedy, I have not one time encountered a women-owned, not to mention lesbian-owned comedy club. It is very, very, very rare,” wrote Julie. “I think it’s amazing. I’m so excited. The fact that its lesbian-owned will tell you the curation of the comedy is going to be at a different level of thoughtfulness.”

“I would imagine there would also be a lack of sexism, which is inherent in comedy clubs,” she added.

Finding her calling to be funny at the tender age of 14, Julie began performing improv when she was a fresh-faced high school freshman at the Comedy Connection in Boston. She’s experienced her fair share of sexism, she told Girls That Roam in 2014.

“I think in general – women comedians are given the raw end of the stick when it comes to clubs still,” wrote Julie. “It’s certainly not the 80’s, but clubs are very fraternal and very male-centric. The owners and managers are generally straight men, and so it can be challenging even at the smallest level to rampant sexism.”

“It just gives me a nice feeling and a trust I wouldn’t necessarily have elsewhere,” continued Julie, who believes that a lesbian-owned club “should give great relief to the comedians performing there.”

Belinda, who is co-creator, producer, and director of Portland Queer Comedy Festival in Portland, Oregon, echoed Julie’s praises, adding that Lisa’s club “gives me a lot of hope for the future of comedy,” she said.

She’s performed at women-owned comedy clubs, but this is the first one she’s performing at that is LGBTQI and welcomes diversity.

“Woman-owned, yes. Lesbian-owned, no,” wrote Belinda about the clubs she’s performed at in the past. “The Laugh Cellar is really unique that way, and I’m excited to see the difference!”

Lisa Pidge, co-owner of The Laugh Cellar, was just a complimentary praising Julie and Belinda, noting the club’s ability to bring top notch talent to Sonoma.

“We’re very excited to welcome world-class LGBTQI talent to wine country,” wrote Lisa in an email interview noting that America’s Gaysian Sweetheart Alec Mapa will perform June 1 to raise money for Sonoma Pride. “It’s an honor to work with talented artists like Julie and Belinda, these rad women are making a huge difference in the world of entertainment.”

The Laugh Cellar’s audiences aren’t necessarily queer, but the shows Julie are performing in are very queer.

Jeffrey is a premier transgender male comic and public speaker and is the host of the wildly popular podcast, “Good News Bad News.”

“I appreciate comedians who don’t take themselves too seriously, have a dash of inappropriateness and don’t pander or shy away from pushing the envelope,” wrote Julie. “I think both Belinda and Jeffrey add a spice of these elements to their acts and that’s why I have fun watching them and continue to want to work with them.”

“Plus, I just genuinely like them and want to hang out with them,” she added.

Julie described comedian Jeffery as being “cute, funny, fun, inappropriate, and a delight to be around,” will perform with her along with Belinda in the City by the Bay at Cobb’s Comedy Club.

Following their show in San Francisco, Julie and Belinda will hit the road to wine country.

“Anyone who comes to this show, will get a real sense of camaraderie and respect – and also funny – the most important thing is they’re funny,” wrote Julie.

That’s what Julie is guaranteeing, these comedians are funny as much as they are diverse.

“You will have an awesome time,” wrote Julie.

Julie’s Bay Area performances are sponsored by Olivia Travel.

Fans can catch Julie and her crew of laugh professionals at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 28 at Cobb’s Comedy Club, 915 Columbus Avenue, San Francisco and at 7 p.m., Friday, March 30, 5755 Mountain Hawk Drive, Santa Rosa. Tickets are $20 and $28, respectively.
