Out Of Sydney’s Many Brunch Spots, Seventeen Should Definitely Be On Your List
by Heather Cassell
It was a beautiful Sydney summer morning as I sipped on my mocha and enjoyed my Spanner crab omelet, it was the newest offering on Seventeen Restaurant’s all organic and sustainable breakfast and brunch menu, while I looked out onto the promenade and docks hosting yachts and sailboats on Walsh Bay.
Diners get a view of seagulls flying overhead of yachts and other boats docked in front of new luxury condominiums and artists’ lofts as residents’ and visitors jogged and strolled along the water walkway.
It was a perfect way to an easy into my day after the sunrise climb of the Harbor Bridge at the Bridge Climb.
The charming dockside restaurant is located within an easy walking distance from the Bridge Climb through the bordering emerging the Rocks and Dawes Point neighborhoods. Exiting the Bridge Climb’s ticketing counter and gift shop, I took a left and then turned right on Lower Fort Street where I came to a stone staircase on my right. I walked down the stairs to Hickson Road, where to my left new shops, art galleries, theaters, and restaurants appeared. I walked a couple of blocks to the roundabout at Circular where a sculpture of a car stood in the center and crossed to the waterside of the street. I walked about another block or two to an opening alongside of a commercial building that opened to the paddock and to where Seventeen is one of two restaurants along the promenade. The signage doesn’t signal that the restaurant is there by name, but it is there, along with bars and a bike shop.
Gentrification of the neighborhoods was evident by protest signs that hung outside of apartment buildings where renovations were underway and boarded up buildings were scattered between boutiques, bars, restaurants and apartment buildings new and old during my short walk along Lower Fort Street to Seventeen. Stepping out onto the paddock was like stepping into another world surrounded by luxury lofts, docked boats, and hip shops and restaurants.
The “slow food” movement as well as an emerging food scene has reached Sydney since my last visit. Seventeen has already become a popular eatery since it opened in December 2017. Executive Chef Clint Jaeger uses organic locally sourced sustainable ingredients in its breakfast, lunch and dinner cuisine. The restaurant also highlights Australia’s wines from well-known to boutique wineries and renowned vintages from around the world.
The most popular items on the breakfast menu are the avocado on rye and the build your own eggs along with the unusual tumeric oats, which is slow cooked with cinnamon sugar and coconut milk, pumpkin seeds, summer berries, apple crème fraiche and edible flowers.
I opted for the crab omelet with herbed creme fraiche, chili, chives, and fresh lemon. Served as a whole quiche pie, the omelet was quite filling and more than enough for two people to share. The eggs were buttery, light and fluffy and the chilis slightly spiced up the dish without taking anything away from the crab, which was abundant.
I sat in my corner of heaven looking out at the water and people passing by while drinking my coffee allowing my breakfast to settle in my stomach. I could have sat there with a good read for hours if I wanted to, but I had to say goodbye to my comfortable seat with a view for my next adventure.
Seventeen offers the perfect start to a day putting you in the right mood for exploring The Rocks and Dawes Point neighborhoods and the day ahead of you.

TYPE OF RESTAURANT: Organic, Sustainable, Breakfast/Brunch, Lunch, and Dinner
RATING: 3 = Aqua
(0 inedible – 5 simply scrumptious)
AMBIANCE: Leisurely outdoor covered waterfront dining with a view of the boats in the docks, luxury condos, and residents and visitors strolling along the promenade.
SCENE: The restaurant attracts people from all walks of life from locals to visitors seeking out good breakfast food. Everyone is casual.
SERVICE: Upon arriving at the restaurant guests are immediately warmly welcomed and taken to their table. The servers are attentive, but not overly attentive, and friendly. Food and beverages were served in a timely manner.
NOISE LEVEL: The open-air environment carries away noises and since the restaurant is located on a promenade along the water and off of the street it’s a great place to either enjoy a quiet breakfast or socialize with friends.
RECOMMENDED DISHES: The crab omelet was delicious, but the avocado on rye and the build your own eggs are the most popular items on the menu.
SIP: I enjoyed my breakfast with a mocha. It wasn’t sweet like American mochas, but more of a European style where you can really taste the chocolate and the espresso.
CHECK, PLEASE: $$$ = $40 – $60
(price of dinner/lunch/breakfast/brunch for an individual meal not including tip)
THE EAT: The location, atmosphere, and the food all come together for a great place to eat.
