What better way to wrap up a week of partying in New Orlean’s French Quarter than being chased by women on roller skates wearing read horns and armed with waffle bats for the fifth annual San Fermin in Nueva Orleans?
The first official replica Spain’s annual Encierro of Pamplona, “The Running of the Bulls,” July 12 – 15 is a cooler and funner – and perhaps a much safer – option for all involved than the real deal.
The bulls are replaced by the Big Easy Rollergirls, hence girls with horns and bats on skates.
There’s nothing like it attracting thousands of participants decked out in white with red sashes strolling through the French Quarter with cocktails in hand in the early Saturday morning. Then at 8 a.m., the girls are unleashed onto the masses chasing them through the corridors of old New Orleans.
“It’s a really good time,” says Fae “MaMalicious” Goodman, a roller derby referee formerly with the BERG. “Women on roller skates chase after drunk tourists. It’s a good time.”
San Fermin in Nueva Orleans is the adventurous and somewhat crazy dream of New Orleans native Mickey Hanning. Inspired by his actual experience running through the streets of Pamplona, Spain being chased by bulls in 2003 he started the event with his wife Beth Rosenfeld Hanning and friends Kurt Eischen and Dylan O’Donnell in 2007.
The year’s event kicks off on July 12 with the Marques de Cacers Wine Dinner and ends July 15 with the El Pobre de Mi. The El Encierro, “Running of the Bulls,” starts at the Sugar Mill on July 14 at 8 a.m. sharp.
To participate in the event as a bull or runner register.
This is yet another only in New Orleans festival not to be missed.
