Moms and Daughters Go On An Adventure With New Trips Designed Just For Them

An award-winning women’s travel company will help mothers and daughters bond through travel with new mother-daughter trips in Baja and Iceland starting in 2019.
Offering adventure trips for mothers and daughters is a natural progression for AdventureWomen. The mother and daughters travel expert team Judi Wineland, Erica Landerson, and Nicole Wineland-Thomson, who bought the 35-year old women’s company from its founder Susan Eckert in 2016, have been traveling together their entire lives. So, it was only a matter of time before they would create trips for mothers and daughters like themselves.
“I know the value of traveling with daughters from my own experience,” said AdventureWomen co-owner, mother and industry pioneer Judi in the company’s March 13 news release. “Many of the most valuable memories I have shared with my daughters have been through travel: supporting one another during challenging adventure activities, discovering a destination side-by-side or learning a new skill together can build lasting memories and serve as the building blocks for a strong, supportive relationship.”
Erica, co-owner of AdventureWomen and daughter, agreed.
“So much of our company’s ethos lies in the belief that we are more than a travel company, but rather a relationship company,” explained Erica. “We encourage women to build new connections with other women and discover more about themselves: what better way to achieve this than through nurturing the unique bond between mother and daughter.”
Judi and her daughters hope that the trips will do what it did for them: “encourage multi-generational travel” and inspire younger female travelers.
An Adventurous Life
Before taking over the company two years ago, Judi was the president of Wineland-Thomson Adventures Inc. Susan and Judi were both bitten by the travel bug when they were young.
Judi discovered her passion for adventure travel as a participant on a USO tour to Vietnam in 1969. Upon returning to the United States, she founded Overseas Adventure Travel in 1978 and co-founded Thomson Safaris, Thomson Treks, Thomson Family Adventures, and most recently Thomson Collection with her husband Rick Thomson. She has spent her life dedicated to providing exceptional adventure travel experiences around the world, offering mother-daughter tours is simply another chapter in her adventure.
Susan served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sierra Leone for three years after graduating from college. The experience inspired her to live a “life dedicated to exploring the world,” according to the company’s website. She began offering tours to her fellow graduate school students while studying for a doctorate. She eventually abandoned her doctorate studies and launched AdventureWomen in 1982.
For the past three and a half decades, AdventureWoman grew from backpacking and canoeing trips, where Susan was the solo guide, to offering some 20 plus quality professionally guided trips for women from beloved to far-flung destinations all over the world plus custom tours and itineraries.
Ideal Destinations
The travel experts chose Baja and Iceland, two of the company’s most popular trips to launch the special mother-daughter trips, because of the “balance of outdoor fun with opportunities to explore the local culture and cuisine,” Nicole, who is the director of programming for the travel company, as well as practicality, said in the release.
“We chose Baja and Iceland because … they are … perfect destinations for active mothers and daughters,” she added.
Mothers and daughters will enjoy swimming, surfing and snorkeling in Baja and hiking, wildlife cruising and horseback riding in Iceland.
“We wanted to keep things energetic, authentic and culturally relevant. There’s no better way to unwind after a day of surfing or horseback riding, for example, than with homemade tortillas and margaritas or a fresh lobster feast,” Nicole said.
