Cheese lovers visiting California now have access to 150 cheeses made by 56 artesian cheese makers and creameries through a new free smart phone app by the California Cheese Trail.
The new app available for iPhone offers easy access to farm tours and in-depth information about cheese makers throughout California along with facts about cheese, information about creameries and cheese tours, and more. Cheese lovers will be able to find out about details on which farms are open to the public, tips for planning a tour, and receiving news about upcoming cheese-making classes and cheese-related events, free cheese tastings and which farmers’ markets and retailers carry which various cheeses.
California is American’s second-largest cheese producer and artesian cheeses continue to lead restaurant and consumer food trend lists, according to the California Cheese Trail June 4 news release.
The California Cheese Trail has offered self-guided tours of Marin and Sonoma county creameries since 2011. The app is an extension of the well trodden path by visitors seeking locally-owned artesian creameries, mostly women and family-owned, in Northern California’s wine country due to the map.
“The California Cheese Trail app is what every cheese lover is looking for – the inside scoop about unique, hand-crafted, artisan cheeses, who makes them and where to find them,” says Vivien Straus, small-farm advocate and creator of the app.
Vivien has a long history in advocating artisan foods, including many years as vice president of marketing at Straus Family Creamery, and leading cheese tours for the award-winning Cowgirl Creamery.
An app for Android smart phones will be available at the Android Marketplace by mid-June.
The app was produced with the help of the California Milk Advisory Board and the California Artisan Cheese Guild.
