5K9 Walk Run 1-mile and 5k Fundraiser Debuts in the Bay Area

Race Series for Active, Healthy Pets and Humans Comes to
San Rafael Sunday, August 4th at Marin Center Fairgrounds and Lagoon Park

All races will benefit local pets

The Petco Foundation and Multisports.com are once again calling all two- and four-legged runners, walkers and waggers to take part in a 5K9 Walk Run series sponsored by Petco and Purina Pro Plan in support of local pets and healthy lifestyles.

The sixth race of a 10-race series takes place Sunday, August 4th the Marin Center Fairgrounds and Lagoon Park, San Rafael, Calif.

Each race includes a 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) and 1 mile run/walk event for runners and walkers, both with and without their dogs. All events will also feature a complete race expo where dogs and their human companions can shop for athletic products, pet products and more. A portion of all 5K9 Walk Run race registrations and fundraising efforts generated by participants will benefit the Petco Foundation, which supports more than 8,000 local animal-welfare organizations across the country including the San Francisco SPCA and Petaluma Animal Services Foundation.

“Obesity in both humans and pets continues to be an issue in the U.S. and we are thrilled to continue this new event and introduce it to new cities. This is a great advocacy and fundraising program to help people and pets stay healthy together,” says Petco Foundation Executive Director Paul Jolly. “The 5K9 Walk Run race series is designed to be fun and rewarding – what better way to get and stay healthy and active, particularly with your four-legged best friend!”

Participants will have access to coaching and training programs for both humans and pets, and they can also connect with other athletes and their pet companions online in their local communities by visiting the race Facebook page.

In its debut earlier this year, the initial 3-race Active and Healthy Pet Awareness series launched in Del Mar, Calif., Tempe, Ariz. and San Antonio,  attracting more than 3,000 pet owners and their dogs to this family, pet-friendly event. In 2013, the series is set to expand to other cities across the country, with new cities announced regularly on 5K9WalkRun.com.
